The Amazon has the second most polluted river in the world.
A study by Fiocruz in partnership with the Mamirauá Institute revealed an alarming fact: the largest river basin on the planet is facing critical levels of plastic pollution, with direct impacts on the fauna, flora, and health of riverside and indigenous communities.
⚠️ Main points of the study:
Plastic waste is already contaminating water, sediments, animals, and plants.
Exposure affects traditional communities, compromising food sources and drinking water.
Pollution comes from cities, boats, and also from irregular disposal in isolated areas, where waste collection is lacking.
Previously, organic waste (shells, bones) has been replaced by PET bottles, Styrofoam packaging, and processed food packages.

While capital cities like Rio and Salvador already restrict some disposable plastics, in the interior of Amazonas, there is no recycling or reduction measures, exacerbating the problem. 🌍 Global Dimension
The research reviewed 52 scientific studies and showed that the impact is much greater than previously thought.
The warning comes on the eve of COP30 in Belém and the UN deadline for 180 countries to finalize the first global treaty against plastic pollution.
